Lent Reflection – John 19.13 – 25a

The soldiers gambling for Jesus’ clothes must have been one more humiliation for him. Jesus was absolutely, completely vulnerable.

Pilate is in the role of a judge, but he does not seem to be fully in control of the situation. People can have all the robes and the authority on the outside, but they are not true leaders. But Pilate still seems to insist on things to some degree. While others object to the title over Jesus’ head, “The King of the Jews,” Pilate’s instructions are to leave the sign alone.
